I will be honest with you, some medications for bipolar make you put on weight. They're called anti-psychotics and believe me they put on weight. I put on 5 stone from them. But I've also been given a medication that's used for bipolar patients and I've not gained a pound on it. Tell your psychiatrist that you don't want an anti-psychotic but you'll take a medication for bipolar. I'm on Lamotrigine (Lamictal) which is used in bipolar patients which hasn't made me gain weight so try that. Just avoid anti-psychotics if you don't want to gain weight. But don't rule out medication altogether. If a doctor thinks you are ill enough and are refusing medications they can section you and force you into a medication. So have a compromise with your psychiatrist and find one that suits. Hope this helps
